Am I crazy?

Throughout the course of my life I've had experience with swimming (a couple of years of swim team when I was a kid, some fitness swimming in ROTC) and running (lost around 80 lbs in college running, lots of running in the AF).

I've never really been into cycling, but I did take that up about a year ago at the urging of my girlfriend. Though it causes me great pain, I do ultimately enjoy it and would like to get better.

So why, why do I now have the desire to combine all three of these sports into one painful, continuous effort?

I'm not sure of the answer to that, but I just know that, all of a sudden, I want to get into triathlons.

Not the Ironman kind mind you... Not the kind with all the impossibly fit, skinny people in spandex. The shorter kind, with people of all shapes and sizes running around in spandex!

I recently learned of what are called "Sprint distance" triathlons. These typically consist of a 250-700 yd swim, 12-18 mile bike ride and a 5k run.

I don't think I could roll out of bed tomorrow morning and do one of these, seeing as I'm far from the best shape of my life, but I think with a couple of months of training I can get there.

So the purpose of this whole blog is to share my thoughts and experiences as I get work my way up to the first triathlon.

Another big goal of mine is to get back down to a more reasonable weight... To this end, I'll put my weight on here whenever I can think about it to see what kind of progress gets made. Today, around 265.
